Geography is studied by all at The Dixie Grammar School from Years 6 to 9. From Year 10 Geography is optional, but is always a popular choice for GCSE and A level.
Geography provides a link to all other subjects on the curriculum due to its wide range of content. Without the broad base of knowledge developed through Geography a full understanding of the sciences and the arts would not be possible.
Our aims are:
- To provide our pupils with an understanding of our place in the world’s society.
- To encourage sympathy and understanding of other cultures and traditions.
- To develop an appreciation of the environment and its sustainable development.
- To develop skills valuable to both examination success and in the world of work.
In Year 6 studies are based on the Key Georgraphy course (supplemented by the Key Geography books published by Stanley Thorne).
The programme of study in years 7 – 9 follow the nation Curriculum objectives for Key Stage 3 as outlined in the Geography 1,2,3 series published by Oxford University Press.
Years 10 and 11 follow the OCR specification B (J385) - see GCSE prospectus.
Years 12 and 13 follow the O.C.R. specification H083 and H483 – see A-level prospectus.
The students can look forward to a range of visits. In the past year Year 13 students have enjoyed a five-day trip to Iceland (inconjunction with the Biology Department) and further expeditions are planned, particularly to North and Mid Wales.
